Jigsaw Scotland is a comprehensive Health and Well-being scheme of work covering the 8 key SHANARRI indicators.

Jigsaw Scotland brings together Personal, Social, Health and Economic education in a structured and comprehensive scheme of work covering; Being Safe (S), Being Healthy (H), Achieving (A), Being Nurtured (N), Being Active (A), Being Respected (R), Taking Responsibility (R) and Being Included (I).

Jigsaw includes cross-curricular links, Assessment Benchmarks and comprehensively meets all the Experiences and Outcomes (Es and Os) for Health and Wellbeing (except for those needing to be taught exclusively through Physical Education lessons).

With a strong emphasis on emotional literacy and nurturing mental health as the necessary underpinnings for learning, with a unique mindfulness approach in every lesson, Jigsaw Scotland provides detailed lesson plans providing practitioners with everything they need to deliver creative teaching and learning activities.

Jigsaw is attractive, clearly laid out and looks very teacher and child-friendly. Staff like the Jigsaw characters and structure of the lessons. We feel the whole school assemblies will help us develop our school community ethos. The 'Calm Me Time' is an excellent idea and will further support and develop the Mindfulness practise already in the school.

What do we mean by a 'Mindful' approach?

Jigsaw teaches children to become aware of their thoughts
and feelings throughout the programme, relating this
to the Health and Wellbeing subject matter being studied.

The Calm Me time at the beginning of each Piece (lesson)
develops mindfulness using breathing techniques,
awareness excercises and visualisations, plus tried
and tested activities which are enjoyable
for children and teachers alike.

The Jigsaw Structure

in greater detail
For each academic year, Jigsaw consists of 6 Puzzles (half-term units of work) containing 6 Pieces (lessons). Every Piece has 2 Learning Intentions. One is based on Health & Wellbeing learning and further enhanced to address children’s needs today. The other is based on emotional literacy and social skills. These enhancements mean that Jigsaw is relevant to children living in today’s world as it helps them understand and be equipped to cope with today’s issues such as body image, cyber and homophobic bullying, and online safety.

Every Puzzle starts with a whole school assembly and an original song for that Puzzle. Each year group studies a parallel Piece of that same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from August to July), allowing for whole school themes.

Teachers have access to all the resources appropriate for the particular Piece that the children are working on: film clips, images, PowerPoint, PDF’s, story books & links to online resources, etc. There are game and activity suggestions with printable resources provided in PDF format that can be re-used for future lessons.

All year groups can participate in an end of Puzzle outcome, e.g. a display or exhibition (like the Garden of Dreams and Goals) which may be shared and celebrated by the entire school. The teaching strategies are varied and are mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation.

Jigsaw raises self-awareness, group awareness, collaboration skills, teamwork experience, respectfulness, etc., preparing children for the wider world and their position in it.

This puzzle includes sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change.
