Sheffield Hallam University LogoThe Sheffield Hallam Centre for Education and Inclusion Research conducted an independent impact study with 101 schools, 195 teachers and 812 children and concluded that Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, really works!

The children at Cathedral School have been enjoying their Jigsaw [Health & Well-being] lessons and using the Jigsaw Friend, Jigsaw Jenie, in all areas of their EYFS learning. The activities used throughout Jigsaw can permeate the whole curriculum and support every area of learning.

The Jigsaw Structure for Health and Well-being

How the big picture fits together
Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (called Puzzles), each containing six lessons (called Pieces) covering each academic year.
Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Health and Well-being knowledge and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills.

Puzzles are launched with a whole-school assembly containing an original song, with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level), building sequentially through the school year, facilitating whole-school learning themes.

Jigsaw, the mindful approach to Health and Well-being, has a unique lesson structure through the Primary Phase, designed to maximise the learning process. Jigsaw also offers various teaching and learning activities which are engaging and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation.

The Early Years planning is aligned to the Welsh Foundation Phase Framework.

Jigsaw’s Puzzles (units of work) are:

Being Me in My World
1. Being Me in My World
Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters.
Celebrating Difference
2. Celebrating Difference
Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work.
Dreams and Goals
3. Dreams and Goals
Includes goal-setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.
Healthy Me
4. Healthy Me
Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.
Relationships
5. Relationships
Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.
Changing Me
6. Changing Me

Jigsaw is attractive, clearly laid out and looks very teacher and child-friendly. Staff like the Jigsaw characters and structure of the lessons. We feel the whole school assemblies will help us develop our school community ethos. The 'Calm Me' time is an excellent idea and will further support and develop the Mindfulness practise already in the school.
