So, does Jigsaw really work?

Independent evidence says, “Yes!”

The Sheffield Hallam Centre for Education and Inclusion Research conducted an independent impact study with 101 schools, 195 teachers and 812 children and concluded that Jigsaw, using its mindful approach DOES WORK!

The Jigsaw Structure

in greater detail
Jigsaw consists of six Puzzles (half-term units of work) containing six Pieces (lessons) for each academic year. Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Health & Wellbeing learning, and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills.

Jigsaw equips children to thrive in today’s world, building resilience and self-esteem and helping them understand real issues e.g. body image, cyber and homophobic bullying, and online safety.

Every Puzzle is launched with a whole-school assembly and an original song. Each year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time, at their own level, (sequentially building through the school year), facilitating whole-school learning themes.

All year groups participate in an end-of-Puzzle outcome, e.g. a display or exhibition (like the Garden of Dreams and Goals) shared and celebrated by the whole-school community. The teaching and learning activities are varied and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation.

Jigsaw, the mindful approach to Health and Wellbeing, has a unique lesson structure through the Primary Phase, designed to maximise the learning process.

We feel the whole school assemblies will help us develop our school community ethos. The 'Calm Me Time' is an excellent idea and will further support and develop the Mindfulness practise already in the school.

What do we mean by a 'Mindful' approach?

Jigsaw teaches children to become aware of their thoughts
and feelings as they happen, helping them to concentrate,
focus and regulate their emotional states.

The Calm Me time at the beginning of each Piece (lesson)
develops mindfulness using breathing techniques,
awareness exercises and visualisations.

In a joint venture with NHS Orkney, Jigsaw is providing a strategic and operational strategy for a consistent and progressive approach to the delivery of Health and Wellbeing/Personal and Social Health Education ... as we begin a phased implementation across our primary schools ... we have been provided with excellent and continuous support by Jan Lever and the Jigsaw Team.
